Common questions

Traffic management planning, answered

What is a Temporary Traffic Management Plan (TMP)?

A TMP is a site-specific plan that sets out how traffic, pedestrians and workers are kept safe around a worksite on or near the road. It covers the layout, signage, speed management and controls needed for the work to happen safely and legally.

What replaced CoPTTM in New Zealand?

New Zealand is moving from CoPTTM to the risk-based New Zealand Guide to Temporary Traffic Management (NZGTTM). Instead of fixed, generic layouts, the NZGTTM approach assesses the real risks of each site and designs proportionate controls. We plan the new way, and our planners work in the risk-based space every day.

What is a risk-based TMP?

Under the NZGTTM, a risk-based TMP is built around the actual hazards of your specific site, the road environment, speeds, volumes and the work being done, rather than applying a one-size-fits-all layout. The controls are matched to the real risk, which is safer and more practical on site.

Do you provide TMP design anywhere in New Zealand?

Yes. We are based in Christchurch and design Temporary Traffic Management Plans for projects nationwide. Whether the work is local or in another region, we plan it remotely and work to the requirements of the relevant Road Controlling Authority.

Who provides traffic management training in New Zealand?

MW Training & Planning delivers NZQA unit standard traffic management courses, including TTM Worker, TMO and STMS, taught by experienced industry professionals. Courses can be booked nationwide and training enquiries are handled directly by our team.

What is the difference between MW Training & Planning and Men at Work?

MW Training & Planning does the planning beforehand, designing your TMP and the supporting documentation. Men at Work, also part of MW Group, delivers the on-road traffic management, the crews, vehicles and on-site setup that put the plan into action.
